Best Hotels Madeira is a curated editorial guide, not an aggregator. We evaluated 60+ properties; 27 made the list. Every one was chosen the way a local would advise a friend: from time spent on the island, with named trade-offs and a genuine tip per house. The list is deliberately short because a list of everything is a list of nothing.

And every listing tells you what we would change, not just what we love — the small rooms, the road noise, the steep walk to dinner. A guide that only flatters is advertising.

The curation

Properties on Best Hotels Madeira are curated in partnership with Insider Madeira — a boutique Destination Management Company based on the island. They design and deliver tailor-made journeys on Madeira for travel advisors, agencies and tour operators worldwide.

Their work is built on in-depth local knowledge and a curated network of hospitality partners across the island: they know which properties consistently deliver, which have changed hands, and what a stay actually feels like beyond the photography. The only rating that matters. No scores, no stars, no “9.2 Excellent” — a place is either worth your money and your week, or it is not on the site.

The insider-tip test

Every property must carry one genuinely useful tip — which rooms to ask for, what to skip, when to book. If we cannot write one honestly, the place does not deserve the curation.

Trade-offs, stated

Small rooms, road noise, a wet coast in winter, a steep walk to dinner — if it is true, it is on the page. A guide that only flatters is advertising.

Nobody pays to be listed

Properties cannot buy a place here, and we tell no one when we are coming. The list shrinks as willingly as it grows.
